Imaam Abu Muhammad al Barbahaaree (d. 329 AH)

Imaam Abu Muhammad al Barbahaaree (d. 329 AH)

His name, Kunyah and Lineage:
He is the Imaam, the example, the Mujaahid, the Shaikh of the Hanbalee scholars and greatest of them in his time: Abu Muhammad Al-Hasan Ibn ‘Alee Ibn Khalf Al-Barbahaaree - an ascription to Barbahaar, which were medicines imported from India.

His Birthplace and Early Life:
The references available do not mention anything about his birth or early life but it appears that he was born and brought up in Baghdaad. This is apparent form his fame amongst its general public, not to mention its scholars. Further, Al-Barbahaaree sat with a group of the companions of the Imaam of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah, Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, rahimahullaah. He studied under them and most of them came from Baghdaad as will be explained. This shows that he grew up in an environment of knowledge and adherence to the Sunnah. This clearly had a great influence on his personality.

This Blog: Its purpose and initial reasons for starting it!

As Salaam Alaykum Wa Rahamtullah,

I logged into my wordpress account today and for some reason, I started getting refferrals from some weird web address with the url: http://botd.wordpress.com and it turns out this is the Top Blogs of the Day webpage, and my blog somehow was #93 on the list. They say in the beginning that these blogs are ranked the most popular based on some kind of “special” formula. I wonder what factors the formula takes into consideration when determining this rank. Whatever the case might be, it does’t really matter, my main purpose in starting this blog is to post up some of my notes from seminars, halaqas, workshops, and audio lectures about Islam, and not to mention cool excerpts from books, articles, and journals I read. The reason I did this was because some of my friends requested me to. When I actually started to “blog” I realized that I could save all my thoughts and cool findings through my adventures in the world wide web just by making a post on here. I further realized that many people seem to come to this blog and end up benefiting (Masturbation invalidating the fast is my most visited post), which alhamdulillah I love, because I seem to make my blog useful to others. So for those who are reading this, I might make posts that others might not agree with and have a strong distaste towards then, which is okay and I find it natural because this is the nature of a human being. The human being, because Allah (Azz wa Ja’al) has granted him an intellect and the ability to reason he might look at things differently than everyone else, which I think is really awesome and would love it if people expressed it. Anyway, I dont know where I am going with this, this might just have been my most non-beneficial post, and I hope you guys can forgive me for this, insha’Allah. To add a little benefit to this post please read the following article/khutbah - Aqeedah: Its Meaning and Importance - I wanted to do a khutbah along those lines insha’Allah because many people have become lax in this issue around me, I have heard some of my muslim brothers sigh in excitment or sadness or anger things liek “oh Jezz!” which is just the same thing as saying “Oh Jesus!” and as part of our aqeedah/belief as Sunni Muslims we call upon none but Allah (Subhaanahu wa ta’ala) alone as He is the Creator, Sustainer, Provider, and Master of the Day of Judgement!

May Allah have Mercy upon us and may the Peace and blessings of Allah be upon the Prophet (Sal Allahu alayhi Wa Sallam), his family, and companions. Ameen

Masturbation in Islam: Compilation of Articles and Fatwas

Bismillah Alhamdulillah was Salaatus Salaam ‘ala RasoolAllah, Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam

In the past few days for some reason I have recieved an influx of visitors to the website and most people have been, masha’Allah reading the posts on the Fiqh of Fasting (after all it’s Ramadhan). The most popular amongst the posts for some reason (we live in the West) is the one on Masturbation. So acting upon the interests of the visitors to this website I have decided to compile a list of beneficial articles talking about Masturbation, the dangers of this habit and ways one can get rid of this addictive habit, insha’Allah. I know it sounds sick but this need sot addressed, the sooner one gets rid of this habit the better. Our religion is the religion revealed to the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa Sallam) form none other than our Creator, Allah and there is no shame in religion. It is better we tackle this issue directly instead of shying away from it. It is sick, but it needs to be addressed.

So the first thing that I found was the Wikipedia entry on the issue of Masturbation, which is almost completely useless except for the part on its risks and the risks of compulsive masturbation, unless one likes to know about the word’s etmology, techniques for males and females, and its history in cultures and religion then one should just stick to the risks of masturbation. I would still reccomend reading these from Wikipedia-

1. Health and Psychological Effects of Masturbation

Besides this there seems to be a plethora of articles from Muslim sources that talk about the issue of masturbation and its islamic ruling, and there are a few sources that talk about how to get rid of this habit.

The Ruling on Masturbation and conditions that may allow for it

Okay, first things first, what is the ruling on Masturbation in Islam, well here it is from IslamQA, there were literally half a dozen websites that just reproduced this same fatwa again and again (and again)-

2. Ruling on Masturbation and ways to cure it (IslamQA)

The ruling seems to be the same across the board for this. If one is having trouble quitting then he should write down the tips and advice and carry it around to remind oneself.

3. Masturbation is sinful and prohibitively disliked according to Hanafi Fiqh

4. Masturbation: A disastrous problem faced by the Youth

I thought this one was a bit comical, atleast the title made me laugh a little bit-

5. Solo Sex (Male and Female Masturbation (alinaam.org)

6. Remedy for Masturbation (alinaam.org)

From Islam Online-

7. The Fatwa on Masturbation

8. How to Give Up Masturbation

9. Masturbation for Both Males and Females: A New Approach (IslamOnline)
From Fiqh mailing lists-

10. Hanafi and Hanbali ruling on Masturbation

Masturbation during Ramadhaan or Fasting

11. Masturbation in Ramadaan (IslamOnline)

12. Masturbation during Ramadaan and issues related to it (Fatwa-Online.com)

13. Invalidation of fast due to Masturbation (IslamQA)

14. Masturbation Breaks the Fast (IslamToday)

Other Non-Muslim and Secular Sources

15. Steps in Overcomming Masturbation

16. Reversing the Effects of Over Masturbation

And Allah Knows Best

May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon the Prophet, Sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, his family and companions. Ameen

Ibnul Qayyim: Reasons for Kibr (Arrogance)

Reasons for Kibr
listed by Ibnul Qayyim Al Jawziyyah (rahimullah)

We were taught some of the reasons for arrogance. Ibnul Qayyim (Rahimullah) mentions the four most common reasons for people falling into kibr or arrogance. These could also be reasons for people splitting away form each other or thinking that their belief is better and thus more deserving of honor than others. We are using the definition of kibr as stated by the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa Sallam). The Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa Sallam) said,

“al Kibr is when you argue with the truth and you look down upon people.”

Arguing with the truth means to argue with clear evidences. For example when someone says the Prophet (sal Allahu alayhi wa Sallam) said so and so and you sau “but” and follow it up with an excuse thats not valid in order to justify a preconcieved idea. Also to look down upon people includes taking away their rights, being unjust to them and oppressing them. The following four reason were mentioned by Ibnul Qayyim (rahimullah) as the most prevalaent ones in his time,a nd they apply to us as well:

  1. Aql - Logic or intellect
  2. Qiyaas/Fiqh - Analogy or Madhabee Rulings
  3. Dhawq - Personal Feelings - whims, desires, or maybe even personal intuitions
  4. Siyaasa - Politics

There might be others besides these that are reasons for arguing with the truth or looking down upon others. Some examples of how these cause a person to become arrogant are: Continue reading ‘Ibnul Qayyim: Reasons for Kibr (Arrogance)’

Imaam Al Laalikaa’ee (d. 418 AH)

He was Abul Qaasim Hibatullaah, Ibn al-Hasan bin Mansoor ar-Raazee, at-Tabaree, al-Laalikaa’ee. The author of the encyclopedia of the ‘aqeedah of the Salaf called Sharh Usool I’tiqaad Ahlis-Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah.

He lived in a time of great confusion and political strife and division. A time when innovations were widespread and were propagated by their profounder and followers, including the Mu‘tazilah, the Qadariyyah, the Khawaarij, the Murjiah, the Rawaafid and others besides them. Around his time many of the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah stood to author books in defense of the ‘aqeedah of the Companions, the Taabe’een and the Salaf after them and to warn against the widespread innovations.

However, the book of al-Laalikaa’ee is the most comprehensive of all those books and its reader can delight in the abundance of knowledge and guidance contained therein. He reports from more than 180 people and this indicates the large number of Shaykhs he learnt from.

Amongst his students was the famous al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadee who said about him in his Taareekh Baghdaad (14/70):

“We wrote from him and he used to understand and memorize (well).”

Ibn Katheer said about him in al-Bidaayah (12/24):

“He used to understand and memorize and he (was always) concerned and anxious about hadeeth.”

He was known for his precision and his perspicacity in hadeeth. One of his students saw Abul-Qaasim al-Laalikaa’ee after his death in a good dream.

Al-Khateeb al-Baghdaadee mentions this and those after him narrate it from him, ‘Alee bin al-Hasan bin Jadaa al-’Akbaree said:

‘I saw Abul-Qaasim at-Tabaree in a dream and I said to him. What has Allaah done with you?’

He said:

‘He has forgiven me.’

I said:

‘For what reason?’

And it was as if he said in a word in a lowered, subdued voice:

‘The Sunnah.’

He died in the year 418 AH whilst he was middle-aged, before he became famous for his knowledge and his works, may Allaah have mercy upon him. Refer to the introduction to Sharh Usoolil-Itiqaad (1/65-101) by Ahmad Sa’d Hamdaan for more details.

And when you are asking your Lord, do not forget those…

As Salaam Alaykum Wa Rahmatullah,

Firstly Ramadan Mubarak! Houston announced that Ramadhaan will commence tommorow in other words Saturday. I am also travelling tommorow so i guess I can actually put into practice this fiqh ruling for the first time in Ramadhaan after learning it.

And in the spirit of Ramadan, I suggest this to read

Congratulating Each Other at the Commencement of Ramadan by Hood Bradford

And secondly, in follwing Hood’s reccomendation - Br. Abu Eesa’s article is a good one -

Ramadhân: Have You Got What It Takes? by Abu Eesa Niamatullah

Also if possible get these two or just borrow them froma  friend if they have it - 186 rules of Ramadhaan or How to make this your best Ramadhan ever by Shaykh Waleed Basyouni from ChinarLeaf. 186 Rules of Ramadhan is very good for fiqh masha’Allah. Shaykh Waleed has a certains tyle which has grown on me, I dont knwo if other will necessarily liek it. But if you want to listen to a live lecture I believe this Sunday at Masjid Mu’mineen in Houston, TX at 5 PM inshaAllah he will be speaking. Someone should verify that.

Also we should try to work on wakign up for Qiyaam al Layl - some tips can be found here from IslamQA- JazakAllahu khayran to Sr. Ruqayya for this on talk.islamicnetwork.com
And when you are prostrating to your Lord in the middle of the night asking Allah to bless you with such and such, do not forget those who are suffering and oppressed and those working and fighting for justice and for the sake of Allah.

For now I leave you with this.. It might be 2 years old, many of these poeple are still being detained. DOnt forget your brothers in Guantanamo and the rest of the world.
