1st Dhul Hijjah 1427 - 21st December 2006

asSalaam ‘alaykum wa Rahmatullaah,

I don’t understand arabic very well but this site according to Hood and AE says it is the 1st of Dhul Hijjah. The local Houston community hasn’t announced anything on their website (yea, pathetic, prolly cuz most of the people are gone for Hajj) and I had to take a journey to and from Dallas all day today, so didn’t hear anything at the masjid.

Virtues of the 10 days of Dhul Hijjah (IslamQA)

Practical Steps (if you arent at Hajj or Umrah):

1) Fast the days of this season

2) Make a lot of adhkaar

3) Do good deeds as they are magnified, maybe carry dates around and when the Maghrib adhaan is called, offer them to others.

4) Make sure your intentions are purified

I recieved an email form a few brothers written by Br. Hesham Ebeid and it’s parts are reproduced in the following:

Merits:

1) They are the best days in the year
The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said about these first ten days: “ The best days in the world are the ten days.”

2) Righteous deeds on these days are more beloved to Allah than on any other days

Ibn `Abbas (ra) reported that the Prophet (saw) said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” The people asked, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah?” He said, “Not even Jihad for the sake of Allah, except in the case of a man who went out to fight, giving himself and his wealth up for the cause, and came back with nothing.” (Reported by al-Bukhari)

3) Allah (swt) swears by them in the Qur’an, indicating their importance

When Allah (swt) says in the Qur’an: “By the dawn; by the ten nights.” (Al-Fajr 89: 1-2)

Jewish woman ‘jumped’….by Jewish men!

Woman Beaten on Jerusalem bus for refusing to move to the rear seat.
by Daphna Berman

Miriam Shear says she was traveling to pray at the Western Wall in Jerusalem’s Old City early on November 24 when a group of ultra-Orthodox (Haredi) men attacked her for refusing to move to the back of the Egged No. 2 bus.

(Source: Haaretz)

This is a pretty crazy news story from the heart of Israel. Some Ultra-Orthodox Jewish men known as the Haredi beat up a 50 year old Jewish-American lady for not moving to the back of the bus. reading through the article it seems that the lady was pretty adamant about sitting at the front of the bus after being requested to move to the back. The lady isn’t too old, so she didn’t have an excuse to walk all the way to the back, and to further hurt her case, there are rear entrances on the bus specifically for the women to sit. It just seems that this lady was too arrogant or just stubborn not to move to the back after being requested for a few days by others. According to the article it seems that it’s Israeli culture to do this, women to the rear and men to the front. I remember when I was goign to school in Saudi Arabia, we had t do the same on the school busses. Here is a picture of Israeli busses operated by Egged, the largest Bus Service in Israel -

as you can see there are enterances front, middle, and rear. I don’t get why this woman didn’t want to move to the back, I think it has soemthing to do with her being an American. From my experience there aren’t too many Americans, whether they are black, or white, or anythign else, that tend to respect other people’s cultures. There are a few that are really respectful but those are just a few. It is almost like they don’t care for others as long as they do what they want and how they want. Perhaps this attitude is reflected int he global scale of things. They tend to thing the only right way to things and ‘humane’ way is their way, and thus superior. They tend not to have consideration for their surroundings or other people’s principles. Or perhaps this woman was a bit too inspired by the Rosa Parks(Israel’s Rosa Parkshwetiz, perhaps?) incident. Well that is what you get for not respecting other people’s customs and cultures. I am not saying what the men did was right but what this woman did was not right either. Even the people around her looked at her weird and hinted to move to the back but she just wouldnt budge.

When I used to go to high school and even in college now, I rememer people being just mean to other people, specially if you arent form America or what you do is a bit un-traditional. They woudl say things like “Man, what you doing this ain’t Pakistan or Mexico or ‘Ghandi’land! This is America, thsi isnt hwo you do it!” or “Go do that in your own country!”. Well I guess now the Israeli people can tell this American lady, “Listen Lady, thsi ain’t America! If you wanna do this go back to your country!”. People just need to understand how to behave properly depending on where they are, and be more considerate of other people’s customs and cultures.

Quote for Thought (3)

17. Said the great Zāhid and Sufi or ascetic, Imām Sahl b. Abdallāh al-Tustarī (d.283), rahīmahullāh:

“The principles of our Madhhab are three: eating permissible food; following the Messenger in his words and deeds; sincerity of intentions and all actions”

[Source: Sahl al-Tustarī, Tafsīr p.153]

18. During the trial of Imām Ahmad, he would often say:

“Say to the heretics, the decisive factor between us and you is the day of funerals”

[Source: Imām Ahmad ibn Hanbal by Abuz Zubair]

19. My thoughts after reading a section of the Excellence of Du’ā from Du’ā: The Weapon of the Believer,

“Du’ā is the greatest act of worship when directed towards Allāh. It is indeed the greatest act of shirk when directed towards anyone other than Allāh.”

20. al Mu’taman reports from Abū Ismā’īl al Harawī al Ansārī(d. 418 AH):

“This affair is an affair for one who has no affair but this affair”

He was talking about the study of hadīth.
[Source: Abu Isma'il al Harawi al Ansari by Abu Rumaysah]

21. ‘Abdullaah ibn al Mubarak (b. 118 AH - d. 181 AH) said,

“A small deed may be great due to the intention behind it., while a great deed may be insignificant due to the intention behind it”

[Source: Ibn Rajab al Hanbali (d. 795 AH), Jaami' al Uloom wal Hikam, Page 13, Umm al Qura, alMansura, Egypt]

22. Ibnul Qayyim says in his Qaseedha Nooniyyah:

If you say “Allah said, and the Messenger (SAW) said,”

the ignorant one will say “where is the saying of so and so?”

23. Shaykh Safi Khan (May Allah preserve Him and restore his health):

“Without Allah, Life is not worth living,

With Allah, Life is worth dying for!”

24. It was related from al Marroodhee that he asked Imaam Ahmad (d. 241 AH - rahimahullaah):

How are you today?

He replied :

How can one’s day be while…

…he is required by his Lord to perform obligatory acts of worship?

…his Prophet is calling him to practice the Sunnah?

…two angels are requiring from him to correct his deeds?

…his nafs urges him to follow its desires?

…Iblees is beckoning him to commit all types of indecent, evil deeds?

…the Angel of Death is observing him (waiting) to take his soul?

…his dependants are asking him to provide them with maintenance?

Poem: Oh Allah!

To you Oh Allah! I dedicate this poem
We make du’a to You Oh Allah! and You alone
We neither call upon the dead in the graves nor in the tombs
A Believer is never helpless nor is he alone
So long as he believes in You, the Sovereign, Omnipotent Lord above the Throne
We ask you Oh Allah! to grant us Jannah, and in it a home!

We take your Attributes upon their apparent
We believe that they are Your’s inherent
You have neither a son nor a parent
Rather you are Allah the Omnipotent not Omnipresent
We seek your Guidance from being errant
These words are those of your humble servant and declarant

Everything is created besides You, Oh Allah and Your Attributes
We affirm for You only that which You for Yourself impute
You Speak with a Sound unlike the idol, the grave, and the mute
You Hear and See everything, in Your Perfection You are Absolute
The creation sincerely calls upon You alone in utter destitute
The Qur’aan and Sunnah are divine, over it we do not dispute

The Qu’raan and Sunnah is our code
Allah didn’t burden us with a task we can’t unload
He is Allah, the Just, to Him is all Praise owed
We don’t believe in omens or talismans, nor do we ourselves forebode
We pray that Jannah is our final abode
To you Oh Allah I dedicate this ode

Yasir Qadhi: Western Xenophobia and Muslim Reactions @ GPU ‘06

Western Xenophobia and Muslim Reactions
with Yasir Qadhi at Global Peace and Unity Conference ‘06

as Salaam ‘alaykum wa Rahamtullaahi wa Barakaatuh

I found this lecture at my dear brother Lota Enterprises, Inc.’s blog. Masha’Allah its a pretty powerful and short lecture by Yasir Qadhi on the western xenophobic environment that has been building up (much more recently specifically in Britain)and the various Muslim reactions in regards to this matter. Then Yasir Qadhi gives some advice regarding the Muslim reactions after taking a few subtle jabs at UK. The video itself is about only 13 minutes. Enjoy, I think Yasir Qadhi wrecks it.

Salaat al Istikhaara

On the authority of Jaabir Ibn ‘Abdullah he said: The Prophet (S) would instruct us to pray for guidance in all of our concerns, just as he would teach us a chapter from the Qur’an. He (S) would say ‘if any of you intends to undertake a mater then let him pray two supererogatory units (two rak’ah naafilah) of prayer and after which he should supplicate:

(i) ‘O Allaah, I seek Your counsel by Your knowledge and by Your power I seek strength and I ask You from Your immense favour, for verily You are able while I am not and verily You know while I do not and You are the Knower of the unseen. O Allaah, if You know this affair -and here he mentions his need- to be good for me in relation to my religion, my life, and end, then decree and facilitate it for me, and bless me with it, and if You know this affair to be ill for me towards my religion, my life, and end, then remove it from me and remove me from it , and decree for me what is good wherever it be and make me satisfied with such.’

One who seeks guidance from his Creator and consults his fellow believers and then remains firm in his resolve does not regret for Allaah has said:

(ii) ‘…and consult them in the affair. Then when you have taken a decision, put your trust in Allaah…”

Siraj Wahhaj: Free Speech and Islam

Alhamdulillah was salaatus salaamu ‘alaa Rasool Allah, sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam

Free Speech and Islam
by Imam Siraj Wahhaj

This is an audio lecture form the University of Virginia - MSA’s Islamic Awareness Week where Imaam Siraj Wahhaj gives a short talk in response to the Danish Cartoons Controversy. I think the Islamic Awareness Week’s theme was “The Cartoon Controversy and the True Character of the Prophet (sal Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)” The talk is mainly about the Freedom of Speech and Islam. Imam Siraj Wahhaj goes a little bit into his personal issues about this and how he is being called by others as a co-conspirator of the 9/11 event even though he has nothing to do with it. He also mentions how some people take a small amount of debatable information and over exaggerate it and pass it of as a real truth, and how it is being done to him and how it affects others. It’s a decent lecture to listen to in a car going to or comming back from school or work, not too intensive or anything. Allahu ‘Alim.
