asSalaam ‘alaykum wa Rahamtullah,
A good brother forwarded me this email with pics of people going to Hajj back in 1953. The photos were in an issue of National Geographic back in 1953. Click on the images to see the full size images, insha’Allah. I was talking to my dad after showing him these photos and he would tell me how different it was when he went back in the 1970s and then again in the 1980s, i think. And as we know Hajj has really changed now. Allahu ‘Alam.
The cover of the magazine.
These are people ready to go to hajj. This is probably the only thing that is the same now and has been since the time of the Prophet (sal Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and Sahaaba (radi Allahu anha).

MashaAllah, great photos. I remember my grandmother telling me about how different it was too. SubhanAllah she was actually leaving the haram for Madinah when that group of men claiming that the mahdi had arrived were walking in.
She said that while they were in the car driving to Madinah, they heard on the radio that the haram was locked down. QadrAllahu wa ma sha fa3al.
if anyone is going to Makkah anytime soon, make sure you check out the Kiswah Factory inshaAllah. They have a museum with old relics from the haramain, among other artifacts.
(I can’t believe how small the jamaraat is!)
wow.. subhanAllah it has changed sooo much..
subhan Allah, it really was a spiritual experience in those days. excellent post masha Allah.
As salaamu alaikum wa rahmatuAllahi wa barakatuh,
SubhanAllah, they really had to work hard back then. Even today, there are stories of similar diligence and determination, such as the following, which is amazing:

May Allah give us all the opportunity to go for Hajj, ameen.
jazak allahu khaiaran for posting. those are really some awesome pics. we went there just a few months before hajj and everytime we go it’s been so wonderfully spiritual. everytime we see the Ka’aba it brings tears to ones eyes.
The brother carrying his Enfield rifle. That’s a neat picture.
Speaking of Hajj, Shaykh GF Haddad has a new book entitled From the Two Holy Sanctuaries: A Hajj Journal. It sounds like a cool book after reading what Shaykh Muhammad Afifi al-Akiti had to say about it.

I have the National Geographic issue from June 1934 with a feature on Hajj. It’s interesting to see how things have changed in these 50s pictures, and now.
Asslamo Allaium Brother Faizan,
Would you be kind enough to upload some pictures from 1934.
Thanks
Assalamoalaikum Brother Faizan
Would it be possible to scan the photos of Hajj from your issue of June 1934 and e-mail them to me please/ I am a Hajj educator and will soon be organising a Hajj seminar with a power point presentation after Ramadhaan Insha Allah.
Jazakamullah Khairan
Aww wow, subhanaAllah. Lovely indeed.
My father went in the late 50s or very early 60s, so he actually experienced the same experiences in those photos :o
Its so amazing how so different it is now. My dad was saying that perhaps in the future the haram will have not 3 levels but 7! And my mom said thats too much; dad said: Well back then they wouldntve dreamt of having three! lol
