Yasir Qadhi @ ISNA ‘06: Intelligent Faith: The Role of Reason and Intellect in Islam

Yes it is finally on…it is finally on Google Video. I attended this talk at the ISNA 2006 Conference this past September ‘06 by Yasir Qadhi. This was an awesome lecture masha’Allah. It was actually done at the MSA Executive Leadership Conference which ran parallel to the ISNA and MSA National Conferences. Also to note that a similar topic was presented by Yasir Qadhi at TDC ‘06 as well but in a much more detailed manner, alhamdulillah. I had taken notes on both but didn’t get around to posting this up on my blog. But I have another surprise for everyone by Yasir Qadhi soon, possible from the ISNA ‘06 conference *hint* *hint* (for thsoe who were there). Notes for this lecture from what I remmeber can be found here at nuqtah’s blog, I don’t think I have seen any other blog with notes on thsi talk. Allahu ‘Alam. Until then enjoy!

asSalaam ‘alaykum wa Rahamtullah,

We have an exciting week coming up for Houston, about which I am too excited about. We are having a speaker come down from Daytona Beach, Florida insha’Allah. His name is Abu Zahirah Abdullah Smith, a graduate form the Islamic University of Medina. He graduated fromt he College of Hadith with honors, ranking #15 in his class. He is also Hood’s buddy while they went to school together. And the weekend is action packed, and I don’t have too much work either. Well to start off the first Event is on Thursday at 1.00 to 2.30 PM. It is a da’wah event for non-muslims (usually a lot of muslims end up coming which is also awesome) for Black History Month. The Flier:

Then following this we have our monthly thursday night dinners where all the MSA peeps get together to just eat and have fun. The event itself is at Maghrib.

Then we move onto friday. We have the jumu’ah khutbah by Abdullah Smith and then followed by a talk by him: Tafseer of the last 3 verses of Surat alHashr a little after the jumu’ah khutbah. Followed by the Qur’an Competition.

Friday Night he will be speaking at a sister’s only halaqa at a Sister’s house.

Saturday is the class on hadith studies by Abdullah Smith again. He will be explaining a 34 line didactic poem written by Imam alBayquni (d. 1080 AH) on hadith terminologies. It is one of the msot popular traditional texts int he field of hadith studies and is taught all over the Muslim world. Insha’Allah I am working with one of the brothers to have a Live online class with this with not only audio feed but video feed as well. Insha’Allah I am really excited about this and I will post the information when itis available to me. Until then here is the flier for the explanation of Mandhumat alBayquniyya event:

Well my ‘ghetto’ camera phone pics of the show on my TV pale in comparision to this great video recorded by Khalil and hosted on Google Video. I got this email that Amad referred to here about Shaykh Isam Rajab coming on ‘The Connection‘ on PBS - KUHT. I happened to check my mail last night at around 8:15 PM and realized it was on now. So I ran to the TV told me brother to turn off his game and turn to Channel 8 and called for my entire family to watch Shaykh Isam on PBS. My mom came down real quick and she was hooked to the TV. It was a nice show alhamdulillah, couldn’t catch the entire show because I had to leave to go to Family Night at Mission Bend, but took pictures of Shaykh Isam on TV. The show itself was about the concept of “Good and Evil” in different religions and philosophy, as there was a professor of philosophy present there as well, along with a Jewish Rabbi and Christian Priest. Shaykh Isam is an awesome guy masha’Allah, and I love him for the sake of Allah. The pictures aren’t that clear because I was snapping pictures of the TV with the camera on my phone.

Hadith Collections and Criticism with Dr. Jonathan brown

This is an interesting talk delivered at MIT by University of Washington NELC Assistant Professor Jonathan Brown on Hadith Collections and Criticism. Professor Brown recently completed his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago where his studies focused on the history of Islam, Islamic law, Qur’an and hadith, Islamic historiography, and hermeneutic traditions in Islam. His dissertation is entitled “The Canonization of al-Bukhari and Muslim: The Formation and Function of the Sunni Hadith Canon.”

The lecture series was hosted by the MIT Muslim Students’ Assocation and held on November 18, 2006.

Also to note, I am not saying these people are not muslim due to my quotes around muslim, I am merely questioning their Islam due to their actions and speech openly disbelieving or opposing the fundamentals of the deen. Pro-regressives as someone termed it and Allah Knows Best!

Muslim organisation offers to help school ban full-face veil

……The school fears it could face financial ruin if it takes on a 12-year-old girl in the High Court, after her father gained legal aid to argue it is her “human right” to wear the niqab - which covers all of her face except her eyes - in classes.

The chairman of the 500-strong Meco organisation, Taj Hargey, said in his letter to the school that the full-face veil was not a requirement of Islam, and that the girl’s father was being unreasonable.

Dr Hargey said: “We are strongly committed to offering you our full and unequivocal support in banning face-masks at school.

He noted that the school already allows many Asian girls to wear the headscarf, and added that he was prepared to lead a national Muslim protest and fundraising effort against what he called

“this largely Saudi-driven campaign to make the niqab a compulsory requirement for Muslim women”.

A dear brother (AbdulHasib) forwarded me this video and translation which was first found on IslamLife.com, Shaykh Jalal Abu alrub’s website. Masha’Allah, it is really deep.

Interviewer: Of course this is Qadr from Allah; we do not object to it. Allah says, “Perhaps you would dislike something and yet it is better for you.” However, Abdullah, tell me about the most important things that you used to have and now you don’t and wish you would have again after you have been paralyzed.

Abdullah: Three wishes??!!! I have three wishes that concern me. I am grieved by the fact that I can’t have them. The first is to be able to prostrate even one “sajdah” to Allah (subhanahu wa ta’aala). I wish I could prostrate to Allah one sajdah only to never rise from it inshaAllah. There is fear inside me. There is an ayah in the Quran that says, “…on the day when a shin will be uncovered and they will be invited to prostrate [to Allah] but they will not be able to.” (surat Noon) Today I can’t prostrate; but when I was able to walk, I had neglected many prayers. Some people may feel sad for me when they see me now. Those people were not sad when I neglected my prayers.
The second wish is to be able to turn one page of the Quran. This is something you (ie: healthy people) never think of. But for me it is like a mountain.
The third is that in a day of “Eid” or happiness or any occasion, I wish I were able enter house and give my mother a hug……(long pause).

US Mayor Converts to Islam

US mayor converts to Islam

MACON, Georgia: Macon Mayor Jack Ellis has converted to Islam and is now working to legally change his name to Hakim Mansour Ellis.

……

Ellis said he has been studying the Quran for years and that his new religion was originally practiced by his ancestors before they were brought to North America as slaves.

At the request of his two of his daughters, Ellis said he will keep his last name the same. (Islamically I thik he isn’t even supposed to or not allowed to, Allahu ‘aAlam)

“If anybody wants to know about Islam, I can hold an intelligent conversation,”

Ellis said.

“What I’ve found is how little we know about the religion.”

C. Jack Ellis was born in Macon, Georgia. He was elected Mayor in July 1999, becoming the first black Mayor in the 176-year history of the city. Not to mention the first muslim Mayor perhaps?

37 Korean Troops Convert to Islam

Ahead of Iraq Deployment, 37 Korean Troops Convert (revert) to Islam

“I became a Muslim because I felt Islam was more humanistic and peaceful than other religions. And if you can religiously connect with the locals, I think it could be a big help in carrying out our peace reconstruction mission.”

So said on Friday those Korean soldiers who converted to Islam ahead of their late July deployment to the Kurdish city of Irbil in northern Iraq.

They had memorized the Arabic confession, ” Ashadu an La ilaha il Allah, Muhammad-ur-Rasool-Allah,” which means,

“I testify that there is no god but God (Arabic: Allah), and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.”

Zaitun Unit Corporal Paek Seong-uk (22) of the Army’s 11th Division said,

“I majored in Arabic in college and upon coming across the Quran, I had much interest in Islam, and I made up my mind to become a Muslim during this religious experience period [provided by the Zaitun Unit].”

He expressed his aspirations.

“If we are sent to Iraq, I want to participate in religious ceremonies with the locals so that they can feel brotherly love and convince them that the Korean troops are not an army of occupation but a force deployed to provide humanitarian support.”
