2. Intention to break fast
Even if a person only has the intention that he/she will break his fast is reason enough for his fast to be invalidated. If one thinks that it is too hard and he wants to go get a hamburger and sits in the car and then he changes his mind and says “AstaghfirAllah!!” then it is too late and he/she has already broken the fast and has to make it up. And there is a trivial difference of opinion regarding whether intention is a pillar or condition of fasting. The Hanafees and Hanbalees are of the view that the intention is a condition of the fast being valid. The Maalikees and Shaafa’ees were of the view that it is a pillar in addition to abstinence. Either way in this case if the intention is lost the thing itself is lost, when you lose the pillar or the condition is still not there then the thing itself is not there or incomplete.
