Fiqh of Fasting: Exemption to the Above Invalidators

11. Above are Exempted in some cases

The fast is not broken if any of these things are done while forgetting or under coercion or because of their ignorance. Prophet (sall Allâhu’ alayhi wa sallam) said: “My ummah is forgiven for mistakes and forgetfulness and for what they are forced to do.” And the statement of Allaah:

وَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ فِيمَا أَخْطَأْتُم بِهِ وَلَكِن مَّا تَعَمَّدَتْ قُلُوبُكُمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَّحِيمًا

“And there is no sin on you concerning that in which you made a mistake, except in regard to what your hearts deliberately intend” [Surat al-Ahzaab 33:5]

Your intention comes first here. You are not intending to break the fast on your own but you are doing something that breaks it because you either forgot, or didn’t know or were forced to do it. It wouldn’t break if say dust or an insect enters the throat or one swallows their own saliva. In conclusion, the things that break the fast usually do not break it unless the following are

1– he should know the ruling

2– he should not have forgotten that he is fasting

3– he should be doing that be choice

And in the end Allah knows best.
